Event Description

Drinking Water Optimization for HABs and Jar Testing - Boise/Glenns Ferry/Boise

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Idaho Rural Water Association (IRWA) are sponsoring a free in-person training for drinking water operators concerning Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). The training will be held November 19 – 21, 2024, at the Idaho Rural Water Association training facility in Boise, Idaho. The third day, you will learn jar testing fundamentals. Jar testing for water treatment helps determine the best type of chemical treatment and/or the chemical dosage for specific water conditions. It is an important tool for coagulation and flocculation to ensure an optimal amount is used without overuse that would waste money and resources.
The full event includes:
Day 1 (IRWA Training Center)
o    Basic overview of HAB occurrence, health effects, advisory levels, and the role of surface water treatment optimization at drinking water plants.
o    HAB monitoring options for public drinking water systems.
o    Optimization strategies

    Cell removal (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration)
            Toxin removal (adsorption, oxidation)
o    Creation of water system-specific preparedness plans
Day 2 (In-plant workshop)
o    Tour of Glenns Ferry drinking water treatment plant
o    Assessment of plant’s treatment in respect to cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins
